Jadavpur University Tragedy: probe reveals student was Stripped Naked and subjected to Ragging

A tragic incident that unfolded at Jadavpur University has raised significant concerns about ragging and student safety within academic institutions. According to a police investigation, a 17-year-old first-year undergraduate student, Swapnadeep Kundu, fell to his death from the second floor of the university's main hostel on August 9. The incident has sparked a nationwide debate on the issue of ragging.

The investigation has unveiled disturbing details, revealing that the young student was subjected to severe ragging that included being stripped naked and paraded around the hostel. Police sources have disclosed that the student was forced to endure over an hour of relentless bullying, during which he desperately ran from room to room in an attempt to escape his tormentors. The ragging also involved hurling homophobic slurs at the victim.

The police have already arrested 13 individuals in connection with the case. At least 12 of these accused individuals have evidence linking them to the ragging incident. As a response to the harrowing nature of the incident, there are discussions about invoking the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act to deal with the situation more comprehensively.

This tragedy has not only shed light on the menace of ragging but has also ignited a political dispute. The opposition party BJP has criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress for inaction, while the latter has pointed fingers at Governor CV Ananda Bose, who holds the position of Chancellor at the university. The Governor called an emergency meeting at Raj Bhavan to assess the ongoing investigation.
